Our story.

A 4-H project gone right!

Mill Bridge Farm was established around 2007 with a few chickens, sheep and some Forman kids who were excited about 4-H. Emma first tried her hand at showing our Tunis sheep for a few years, and decided it wasn’t for her. Noah had already raised some pigs when he was approached by the neighboring Taylor Farm with a well matched pair of Milking Shorthorn bull calves. Four teams of working steers later, he moved on to training his bird dogs. Will decided he wanted to show Guernseys like his Great Grandpa Joe, and Sara has followed in his footsteps.

Chris was the only one who knew his Grandpa Joe (JJ McCandless) but everyone in our family has grown up hearing his story. Grandpa Joe was an Irish immigrant who found his way to California, and owned Rockview Dairy in Downey, California from the 1930's -1960's. As a part of his dairy, he had a Rockview Guernsey Show herd, and was eventually president of the California Guernsey Cattle Club. He was recognized for his high quality Guernseys in the county and state California fairs. Beyond those awards, he was also known for his contributions to his community, whether through tours of his dairy by thousands of schoolchildren, or several overseas donations of Guernsey cows to South Korea in the 1960's. “If a job’s worth doing, it’s worth doing well!” is a Grandpa Joe saying that’s often quoted in our family.

Our first Guernsey joined Mill Bridge Farm in 2011, and the herd has grown as Grandpa Joe’s great grandchildren, Will and Sara, have worked hard raising and showing our Guernseys, with an enthusiastic support team of their parents, Angela and Chris. Mill Bridge Farm now has 3 to 5 milking cows, with 6 or more heifers and calves in the barn. We still have a small flock of Tunis sheep, some chickens, a few seasonal pigs, 4 brown dogs, and some friendly barn cats.

In January of 2023, Mill Bridge Farm put their Guernsey girls to work, and launched a long dreamed of Ricotta cheese business. Drawing from Angela’s Italian family, a fresh ricotta from our Guernseys' rich, creamy, and golden milk offered a beautiful and simple cheese with so much potential. We are now making small batches of our ricotta that's being sold in our local small stores and farmer's markets, and used by local businesses, restaurants and bakeries to create the most amazing ricotta products!
